History Of Fountain Valley California

Similar to other cities in the region, the area that is now Fountain Valley was inhabited by indigenous peoples (the Tongva people) prior to European settlers who arrived following the Spanish expeditions of the late 1700s. It later became part of the one of the fables ranchos that were land grants from Spain, specifically the Rancho Los Nietos. In 1957 the city was officially incorporated. The name derives from the fact that the area has high water tables.

Origins of Fountain Valley

From the Ranchos of the early 1800s, the area developed more following the cession of land from Mexico after the Mexican American War. Prior to incorporation the area had been known as Talbert, but changed when incorporation took place. The local economy was primarily agrarian until housing developments began in the 1960s. There are also a large number of Vietnamese residents who came to the area following the war in Viet Nam.
