California’s Dubious Honor

Taking a look at the statistics for the most recent year for which there is sufficient data (2019) on the IIHS website we can easily see that California leads the rest of the country in fatal motor vehicle accidents.

There is, of course, a correlation to the amount of miles driven in any given state and the number of accidents (fatal or otherwise). California is big in many ways, one of which is geographically. There’s just a lot of roadways in the state. Also a factor is our population. We’re the most populous state in the Union so it stands to reason our automobile accident rate would be higher than less populous states. We have more people and more people who own or drive cars.
Texas, another populous state comes in a close second. It’s a larger area geographically, but does have a somewhat lower population than we do. Still, the sheer number of fatalities in car accidents is close to California’s. Our state lays unfortunate claim to 3,316 fatal car crashes while Texas had 3,294. They do overtake us in total fatalities (3,615 vs. 3,606) but lest we get lost in numbers let’s remember that each one of these fatalities was a neighbor, son or daughter, husband or wife or colleague.
The fact that our state leads the nation in such unfortunate statistics is saddening. Yet, we can sit back and do nothing more than digest such statistics or we can be proactive. Anything that can be done to prevent future fatalities—indeed car accidents of any kind—thorough education or legislation is a desirable goal. The reality is, however, that given human nature (as well as Mother Nature) there will always be a certain number of auto accidents in any given year.
