CAALA Convention 2012

I just returned from the 2012 CAALA Convention in Las Vegas. CAALA is the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles. The membership includes attorneys throughout California, Nevada and elsewhere. At the Convention there were great speakers providing information and first hand experiences in a variety of areas: Motions in Limine, Choosing Experts and especially important, Closing Arguments. The presentation by Mike Alder regarding his closing argument regarding a young man who was “High” as the defense repeated throughout the trial, was amazing. The young man was distracted by motorcycles in the back of his truck that moved and struck a car that was stopped by a police officer giving the stopped driver a ticket. The officer ended up a paraplegic. Mike Alder argued to the jury that the negligent loading of the motorcycles was a substantial factor that was a cause of the incident. Mike argued that the crash would not have happened without the negligent loading and the young man being high. Mike was eloquent in his first person narrative of the impact that the officer went through. The jury agreed with Mike and rendered a $35 million award against the motorcycle company that improperly loaded the motorcycles.
